I built Aapdu Ghar because nobody should arrive in Canada and not know where to sleep that night.

Every year, hundreds of thousands of Indian students leave home for Canada. They pack two suitcases, say goodbye to their families, and board a plane to a country where everything — the weather, the language, the food, the streets — is unfamiliar. They come with big dreams. But nobody tells them where to live.

They scroll through Facebook groups full of scammers. They pay brokers two months' rent just to see a room. They sleep on friends' couches, in temples, in cars — until they find something, anything, to call home. I've seen it. I know that feeling. And it broke my heart every single time.

So I built Aapdu Ghar. Not as a startup. Not as a business chasing venture capital. As one of our own — Gujarati, from Gujarat, living in Canada — who decided enough was enough.

On Aapdu Ghar, landlords pay just $20 a month to list their property. Students browse for free. There is no broker. There is no commission. There is no middleman taking your money. Just real listings from real people in our community, verified before they go live.

This is for the student landing alone at Pearson Airport. For the couple looking for a vegetarian kitchen in Brampton. For the Punjabi family in Surrey seeking neighbours who understand their way of life. For the South Indian techie in Waterloo, and the Gujarati single in Toronto just wanting to feel at home. This is for all of us.

I'm from Gujarat, so I named it Aapdu Ghar — "our home" in my mother tongue. But please don't focus on the name: the feeling of ghar (घर) is the same in every Indian language — ਘਰ, வீடு, ఇల్లు, ঘর — and I built this for all of India, together.

मैंने 'अपना घर' (Aapdu Ghar) इसलिए बनाया, ताकि कनाडा आने के बाद किसी को भी यह चिंता न करनी पड़े कि आज रात मैं कहाँ सोऊँगा।

हर साल लाखों भारतीय विद्यार्थी अपना घर छोड़कर कनाडा आते हैं। दो सूटकेस में अपना सामान और आँखों में बड़े सपने लेकर, वे अपने परिवार को अलविदा कहकर ऐसे देश में कदम रखते हैं जहाँ सब कुछ नया होता है — मौसम, भाषा, खान-पान और रास्ते। पर अफ़सोस, कोई उन्हें यह नहीं बताता कि वे रहेंगे कहाँ?

रहने के लिए वे सोशल मीडिया पर ठगों के बीच भटकते हैं। सिर्फ़ एक कमरा देखने के लिए ब्रोकरों को हज़ारों डॉलर दे देते हैं। जब तक कोई पक्का ठिकाना न मिले, वे दोस्तों के सोफ़े पर या गाड़ियों में रातें गुज़ारते हैं। मैंने यह सब क़रीब से देखा और महसूस किया है, और हर बार मेरा दिल दुखा है।

इसलिए मैंने 'अपना घर' बनाया। यह मुनाफ़ा कमाने वाला स्टार्टअप नहीं है, बल्कि कनाडा में रहने वाले आप जैसे ही एक भारतीय का प्रयास है, जिसने ठान लिया कि अब अपने लोगों को परेशान नहीं होने देना।

इस प्लेटफ़ॉर्म पर मकान-मालिक अपनी प्रॉपर्टी लिस्ट करने के लिए महीने के सिर्फ़ $20 देते हैं, जबकि विद्यार्थियों के लिए यह सेवा पूरी तरह मुफ़्त है। यहाँ कोई बिचौलिया या कमीशन नहीं है। हर लिस्टिंग को वेरिफ़ाई करने के बाद ही डाला जाता है, ताकि आप सुरक्षित रहें।

यह प्लेटफ़ॉर्म पियरसन एयरपोर्ट पर अकेले उतरे उस विद्यार्थी के लिए है, ब्रैम्पटन में शाकाहारी रसोई ढूँढते उस दंपति के लिए है, और हर उस भारतीय के लिए है जो विदेश में 'अपने घर' जैसा सुकून चाहता है।

नाम पर मत जाइए — मैं गुजरात से हूँ, इसलिए नाम मेरी मातृभाषा में है, पर यह 'अपना घर' पूरे भारत के लिए है। क्योंकि घर से दूर भी एक घर होना चाहिए।
